South Central Kansas Medical Center was forced to cancel procedures today as a result of a fire system sprinkler head being accidentally triggered within one of the surgery department’s procedure rooms. An investigation is still underway to determine what exactly caused the incident.

Chairman Daniel Hawkins and members of the Health and Human Services committee will be hearing arguments and testimonies on how expanding KanCare will benefit the state. SCKMC Chief Executive Officer Virgil Watson has been asked to participate by providing his own testimony to the committee, explaining how KanCare expansion could benefit the medical center.

K-State Research and Extension Cowley County is partnering with South Central Kansas Medical Center to offer Dining with Diabetes. This national extension program is designed to boost the health and wellness of Kansans with Type 2 diabetes and help educate their family members, caregivers and others who support them.

A prescription discount program which could offer significant out of pocket savings to some has been approved for implementation at South Central Kansas Clinic. The Federal program is called 340B, and has been in place since 2015 at the hospital.

The South Central Kansas Medical Center Annual Auxiliary Awards Luncheon was held on Tuesday, April 11th. The event is used to recognize those members who have shown an outstanding commitment to the hospital throughout the past year.

The medical center’s family birthing center has received special recognition from the March of Dimes for reducing the number of elective inductions and cesarean deliveries performed before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy.
May hosts two of the nation’s largest healthcare recognition weeks, National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. SCKMC held events for both of these special occasions.

South Central Kansas Medical Center is currently completing the application process for a State grant which, if approved, would help to raise funds for diagnostic imaging equipment while providing donors with a possible 70% tax credit.

South Central Kansas Medical Center is one of 15 hospitals in Kansas to receive the Women’s Choice Award® as America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care 2017. This is the fourth year in a row that SCKMC has received the award.

“This is a monumental achievement for (SCKMC). We think we have put a process together that will move the hospital forward. One thing that we have tried to do as we stabilize the hospital financially is that we find things to give the maximum reimbursement without any increase in workload. If we get this approved today, we will have accomplished that,” said Virgil Watson, SCKMC CEO.

Medical providers at South Central Kansas Medical Center have recently launched a new program designed to honor staff who assist with the care of the facilities most critical patients. Providers with Integrity Healthcare Professionals announced the recognition program earlier this week. Integrity Healthcare Professionals is partnered with the medical center to provide emergency room coverage at the facility.

Judy Day-Trenary is a member of the SCKMC Auxiliary who volunteers her time at the hospital. She is also a member of #620rocks group, painting and hiding approximately 50 rocks within the community. Day-Trenary’s involvement with both groups is what helped to bring the hospital’s rock garden idea to fruition.

South Central Kansas Medical Center is planning to bring a new concept in health and wellness to Cowley County through a new clinic which will open in January. The clinic will be located on the medical center campus and is offered through a partnership with Revere Healthcare Solutions Inc. (RHS). The clinic will be providing direct access to primary care with a strong emphasis on preventative healthcare.

Cowley HealthWoRX will offer preventative healthcare, traditional primary care services, occupational health, and testing services without the typical wait times for appointments or red tape from the insurance companies. The clinic is employer driven, meaning that it is designed to be offered as a benefit to a company’s employees with no out of pocket deductibles or office visit copays for individuals that are covered through the program.

Three South Central Kansas Medical Center physicians will be relocating their clinic practices from the hospital campus to Winfield Medical Arts. Dr. Tyson Blatchford, general surgeon; Dr. Perry Lin, obstetrics and gynecology; and Dr. Willie Posey II, Internal Medicine and Cardiology will begin seeing patients at their new clinic, located at 3625 Quail Ridge Drive in Winfield, beginning December 4th.
