This past Tuesday the volunteers of South Central Kansas Medical Center’s Auxiliary celebrated another successful year during their annual Christmas luncheon. The men and women of the Auxiliary volunteer at the hospital five days a week, performing a variety of tasks. In addition, they represent the hospital during several community events such as the Health and Safety Fair.

Dr. Perry Lin, who practices at South Central Kansas Medical Center, recently completed the recertification process for diplomats of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Lin is one of roughly one-thousand American board certified reproductive endocrinologist/infertility specialists in the world, making it one of the rarest board certifications.

South Central Kansas Medical Center’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Perkins, has tendered his resignation, effective in January 2015, to its Board of Trustees. In his letter Perkins said, “I have done everything I can do for SCKMC. I believe the organization needs a new direction, and I do as well.”

With less than three weeks left before the November election, representatives from South Central Kansas Medical Center are busy meeting with the public to discuss the need for a ten-year, one-half cent sales tax. Should the tax pass, funds would be used for a variety of health related initiatives including physician recruitment and development of an afterhours urgent care clinic.

As the former Arkansas City Memorial Hospital is prepared to be demolished within the upcoming weeks, a historical piece from that site was relocated to South Central Kansas Medical Center. Until this past Friday, the caduceus stone had resided on the corner of First Street and Birch Avenue. It had been used as part of the hospital’s signage for several decades.

(Cowley County, Kansas): According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 130 million patients visit hospital emergency rooms each year. Up to eighty-percent of those ER visits, are due to a lack of access to other providers, and the majority are not considered serious enough to qualify for “emergent” status. This over use of emergency services has prompted a new type of healthcare service, the urgent care center.

It’s been five years since the citizens of Arkansas City approved a ten year, one-half cent sales to assist in the construction of the new hospital, outpatient services building, and several new equipment purchases. With those goals accomplished, the SCKMC Board of Trustees is asking the citizens of Arkansas City to vote during the November election for a new ten-year, one-half cent sales tax to be used for physician recruitment, service expansion & development.

Urinary incontinence (UI), or the involuntary loss of urine, is not a comfortable subject to discuss for most people. However the condition is quite common in women, particularly as they age. It is estimated that up to 30-percent of women 60 years of age or older have UI.
Dr. Perry Lin, OB/GYN with South Central Kansas Medical Center, regularly sees patients who suffer from UI. He has been preforming a corrective procedure for the condition for the past fourteen years.

South Central Kansas Medical Center and general surgeon Dr. Tyson Blatchford are leaders in the State for the advanced treatment of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease), more commonly known as chronic heartburn. Dr. Blatchford is one of only a handful of surgeons in Kansas trained to perform the state-of-the-art incisionless surgery known as the EsophyX TIF procedure to correct the physical problem at the source of the disease.

(Cowley County, Kansas): South Central Kansas Medical Center announced today that Summit Clinic will be merging with the hospital to form a new medical practice, South Central Kansas Clinic, LLC. SC Kansas Clinic includes Dr. Kamran Shahzada, Internal Medicine; Dr. Rhonda Green, Family Medicine; Dr. Eric Thomson, Family Medicine; and Angela Ziegler, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

Dr. Perry Lin has almost two decades of experience as an obstetrics and gynecological physician specialist. For the past two years he has been caring for patients locally through South Central Kansas Medical Center. His medical specialty allows for him to care for a varied age group and a wide range of women’s health conditions.

But for those in the healthcare industry, May is a time of celebration. This month hosts two of the nation’s largest healthcare recognition weeks, National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. Administrators at South Central Kansas Medical Center knew they had partnered with someone special when Dr. Perry Lin was hired as Ark City’s first full-time obstetrics and gynecological care specialist. However, even they did not realize how elite his training and experience had been.

Dr. Tyson Blatchford, general surgeon at South Central Kansas Medical Center, and his team have recently begun treating patients suffering from slow healing wounds with a unique treatment that utilizes living cells to speed healing. The treatment, called Apligraf, has been used nationally to treat thousands of patients for venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers.

The South Central Kansas Medical Center Annual Auxiliary Awards Luncheon was held on Tuesday, April 8th. The event is used to recognize those members who have shown an outstanding commitment to the hospital through out the past year. With over 50 active members, the organization provided a substantial impact to the hospital in 2013.
